A mimic of a songbird who was too curious. Just close enough to where the trail dead ends to confirm a presence. To anyone other than you this may sound strange. I'm walking through some woods now knowing I won't make it home til dawn. I left a trinket on a sanctuary window. I wonder if it survives. It's 2 am now. There's a strange man saying strange things making strange gestures to the moon. I think I'll go sit with him for awhile on the limestone. The lake is quiet. The sky is clear. The water cold.

One time I got out of my car at my little Athens, Alabama apartment to find my beautifully marked black and grey striped cat with amber markings squared off against a young copperhead. Strategic, she kept provoking him to strike at her, keeping just out of range. I picked her up, commenting to the intruder as I walked past him, "Don't you dare strike at me, Snakey, I just saved your life." I didn't save it though. I only extended it slightly. Everything that is born has a destined time to die. That moment wasn't his, that's all. My cat stood inside at the door yawling relentlessly until I let her go back out. I later found him dead. He challenged the wrong territory.
Enjoyed experiencing this piece with you. I love it that your daughter understands that plants are sentient beings too, and that you will not try to "educate" that out of her. Her mother's savage daughter. 😊
